In the nineteenth century the roll top desk first made its way into home offices. There were many who loved these desks and who still do to this day. There was not a home that had an office which did not include a roll top desk as the main piece of furniture for the room.
There were a large amount of families who not extremely wealthy could afford to purchase a roll top desk. It was easy to make many of these desks at a time due to the nature of the top. It took little time to create many of the boards that were used for the top.
Modern Office Desks
There were desks that were related to the roll top but they were not as easily produced. Not many are even aware of these other desks. One more popular model was the cylinder shaped desk first made by the French. This desk had one major flaw that kept it from becoming the mainstay that the roll top has become. If the wood got warped or damaged, the top would become stuck and could not move.
There are similarities between the two desks with the main difference being the curve with which the top opens. The roll-top would open even if the wood did become damaged or warped. Other similar desks did not have quite the same commonality as these other two desks did.
The bottom of the roll top desk had many compartments for documents and was always made entirely of wood. There was also the top that was made of wood and was made from thin boards that were secured with leather ran through an "S" curve that allowed it to be opened and closed easily. The top also had nooks and drawers that would hold the records for the house or business accounts and could be locked from prying eyes.
The roll top desk began to be less used when the metal desks were first introduced to the more modern offices. The metal desks were more efficient for the types of documents that were being produced with the invention of the typewriter. These metal desks had less small nooks and had larger compartments for the documents that needed filing and the roll top took a back seat to them.
There were so many roll-top desks that were made in previous times that it is not hard to find them in any shop in the country. It is becoming widely common to see these desks in the home once again. They are even being constructed new.
When you purchase a new roll-top desk, you will find that modern additions have been made. Many will be able to store their computers in these desks quite easily and can be locked to protect expensive software and monitors.
